Brush up on the rules of sharing the road with buses and
pedestrians with these helpful tips:
- Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop to pick up or drop off children. Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
- Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped, and that children are getting on or off.
- Drivers must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
- Drivers must stop 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights. This applies to vehicles approaching from any direction.
- Slow to the designated speed and be particularly watchful when driving in school zones.
- Be alert! Children can be unpredictable and tend to ignore hazards and take risks.
- When in a school zone watch for school patrol officers or crossing guards and be sure to stop when they are in the intersection.
- DO NOT block the crosswalk when stopped. This may force pedestrians to go around the vehicle putting them in the path of moving traffic.
- Pay extra attention for pedestrians in school zones, near playgrounds and parks.
